Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. For every step, sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the top of the manga man’s head. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine the height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Space out the marks evenly at the beginning. The farther apart the marks are, the bigger the circle will be. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you’re struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a bowl or a lid.
Step 2: Below the circle, draw an angled line as a guide for the lower part of the man’s head. The lines on the sides should slope and angle inward to create the jaw. Use a short horizontal line for the bottom as the chin. Pay attention to the length of this guide. If you draw it too long, then the head will be too long too. If you were drawing the head for a younger boy this guide would have to be a little bit shorter.
Step 3: Half way between the top and bottom of the head, draw a long horizontal line as a construction guide that will help you place the man’s facial features later. The sides of this line should end close to where the circle meets the jaw. Draw a long vertical line across the entire head for another construction guide. Place this line directly in the middle of the entire shape too.
Step 4: On each side of the head, draw a curved line as guides for the manga man’s ears. Place the ears directly below the horizontal construction line that’s inside the head. Under the head, draw two short vertical lines as guides for the neck.
Step 6: Inside each eye, draw a small circle for the man’s irises. The top parts of the irises should be behind the shapes of the eyes. The bottom parts of the irises should not touch the bottom parts of the eyes. In the middle of each iris, draw a small circle and shade it in for the pupils. Pay attention to the size of the pupils in relation to the irises.
Step 7: On the edge of each iris, draw a two tiny circles for highlights. On each iris, there should be a circle near the top and another circle near the bottom. Draw the circles directly over the edges of the irises. Above each eye, draw a curved horizontal line for the folds of the eyelids. Above each eyelid, draw a smaller angled line for more detail.
Step 8: Slightly higher above the eyes, draw two thick, long, horizontal shapes for the eyebrows. The inner tips of the eyebrows should be thick and they should slope down a bit. Make the inner tips bushy too. The outer tips of the eyebrows should be thinner. Use the vertical construction line as a guide to help you space out the eyebrows.
Step 9: Near the bottom edge of the first circle and to the left of the vertical construction line, draw a vertical line for the bridge of the man’s nose. Curve the bottom part for the tip of the nose. On either side of the nose, draw a tiny horizontal line for the nostrils. To the left of the nostril on the left, draw a short, vertical line for the outer nostril. Pay attention to the placement of the nose; leave enough room at the bottom for the mouth.
Step 10: About halfway between the nose and the chin, draw a short, horizontal line for the mouth. The width of the mouth should be about the same as the distance between the eyes. Below the mouth, draw a shorter horizontal line for the lower lip.
Step 11: Darken the curved lines on the sides of the head for the manga man’s ears. Inside each ear, draw a series of curved shapes for the inner ear structure. These lines don’t have to be perfect, just draw some short curved lines for detail. You can also draw fewer lines and it would still look okay.
Step 12: Darken the outer edges of the first two guides to create the shape of the man’s head. Leave a gap on the sides of the head to accentuate where the ears connect to the head. As you darken the lines on the bottom, make the shapes curvier for a smoother jaw and chin. Darken the vertical lines under the head for the neck.
Final Step: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don’t worry about erasing all of the guides. It’s okay to leave some behind. Erase the bit of the irises that are inside the tiny highlight circles. The highlight circles should be blank inside. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.
That’s it! Keep practicing until you get the face and head right. Draw the shapes over and over adjusting things as you like and eventually you’ll get better!
