Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. For every step, sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the top of the manga woman’s head. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine the height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Space out the marks evenly at the beginning. The farther apart the marks are, the bigger the circle will be. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you’re struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a bowl or a lid.
Step 3: Half way between the top and bottom of the head, draw a long horizontal line as a construction guide that will help you place the woman’s facial features later. The sides of this line should end where the circle meets the jaw. Draw a long vertical line across the entire head for another construction guide. Place this line directly in the middle of the entire shape too.
Step 4: On each side of the head, draw a curved line as guides for the manga woman’s ears. Place the ears directly below the horizontal construction line that’s inside the head. Under the head, draw two short vertical lines as guides for the neck.
Step 5: Now that you’re done with the guide lines, start adding the final features. Inside the head, directly under the horizontal construction line, draw two oval-like shapes for the woman’s eyes. Place the eyes equally spaced on either side of the vertical construction line. Don’t make them too big. The eyes should fit in the area between the horizontal construction line and the bottom edge of the first circle. If this were a drawing of a younger girl, then the eyes would have to be bigger. The shapes of the eyes should be similar to little footballs. Notice that the inner corners of the eyes don’t connect.
Step 6: On top of the eyes, draw a few short, curved spike-like shapes for the woman’s eyelashes. The eyelashes should mainly be on the sides of the eyes. On the bottom of each eye, draw more spike-like shapes for the lower eyelashes but make them smaller.
Step 7: Inside each eye, draw a small circle for the woman’s irises. The top parts of the irises should be behind the shapes of the eyes. The bottom parts of the irises should not touch the bottom parts of the eyes. In the middle of each iris, draw a small circle and shade it in for the pupils. Pay attention to the size of the pupils in relation to the irises.
Step 8: On the edge of each iris, draw a two tiny circles for highlights. On each iris, there should be a circle near the top and another circle near the bottom. Draw the circles directly over the edges of the irises. Above each eye, draw a curved horizontal line for the folds of the eyelids. Above each eyelid, draw a smaller angled line for more detail.
Step 9: Higher above the eyes, draw two long, horizontal lines for the eyebrows. The inner tips of the eyebrows should be thick and they should slope down a bit. The outer tips of the eyebrows should be thinner. Use the vertical construction line as a guide to help you space out the eyebrows.
Step 10: Directly below the first circle and slightly to the left of the vertical construction line, draw a short, angled line for the woman’s nose. On the left side of the nose, draw an even smaller angled line for the left nostril. On the right side of the nose, draw a dot for the right nostril opening. Halfway between the bottom edge of the initial circle and the chin, draw a short, horizontal line for the mouth. Below the mouth, draw an even shorter line for the lower lip.
Step 11: Darken the curved lines on the sides of the head for the manga woman’s ears. Inside each ear, draw a series of curved shapes for the inner ear structure. These lines don’t have to be perfect, just draw some short curved lines for detail. You can also draw fewer lines and it would still look okay.
Step 12: Darken the outer edges of the first two guides to create the shape of the woman’s head. Leave a gap on the sides of the head to accentuate where the ears connect to the head. As you darken the lines on the bottom, make the shapes curvier for a smoother jaw and chin. Darken the vertical lines under the head for the neck.
Final Step: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don’t worry about erasing all of the guides. It’s okay to leave some behind. Erase the bit of the irises that are inside the tiny highlight circles. The highlight circles should be blank inside. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.
That’s it! Keep practicing until you get the face and head right. Draw the shapes over and over adjusting things as you like and eventually you’ll get better!
