Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. For every step, sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake.
Step 1: Draw two short, wide arcs for the top parts of the eyes. Make the arcs angle a bit. The inner tips should be thin, while the outer tips should be thick. Draw both arcs the same shape and size. The dotted line in the middle is to help you visualize the distance between the eyes. That means that in the space between the eyes, you should be able to fit a third arc that’s exactly the same size as the other two.
If you need help with the spacing of the eyes, then draw the arc on the far left side first. Then directly to it’s right, lightly sketch another arc of the exact same width (this is represented by the dotted line). Then to the right of that, draw the arc for the eye on the right using yet another arc of the exact same size. Erase the middle arc when you get the sizes right.
Step 2: On the outer tip of each arc, draw a pointy line that curves down. At the bottom of each arc, draw a thin line for the bottom parts of the eyes. You can connect the sides of the eyes to the bottom but it looks cooler to have a small gap in the bottoms of the eyes.
Step 3: At the top of each eye, on the sides, draw a couple of short, pointy lines for a couple of eyelashes. Above each eye, draw a long, horizontal line for the folds of the eyelids.
Step 4: Inside each eye shape, draw a big circular shape for the irises. The shapes are basically ovals with the top parts hiding behind the top edges of the eyes. They’re kind of like rounded letter U’s. It’s important to make each side the same, so sketch lightly at first and take your time until you get the shapes right.
Step 5: Inside each iris, draw a big circle for the pupils. Draw the pupils directly in the middle of each eye. Shade the inside of the ovals.
Step 6: On the left side of each iris, draw a small circle for some highlight or glare. Draw the circles directly over the edges of the irises. The lines inside the highlight circles will be erased at a later step. On the inside of each iris, on the lower, right side, draw an even smaller circle for more highlights. These circle aren’t directly on the edge of the irises, they’re inside completely for a bit more variety.
Step 7: High above each eye, draw a long horizontal line for the first part of the eyebrows. The inner tips of the eyebrows should curve up a bit. Near the outer edges, the lines should angle a bit. Make both sides the same. The eyes should be as symmetrical as you can make them.
Step 8: Draw another line on top of the line in the previous step to finish the shape of the eyebrows. Add a few jagged lines on the inside tip of the shapes for bushier eyebrows.
Another difference between boy eyes and girls eye in manga is that boys sometimes have thicker, bushier eyebrows, whereas girls tend to have thin, smooth eyebrows.
Step 9: Shade the inside of the eyebrows using a medium value. You can also leave the inside blank and color it in later, after you ink the drawing.
Step 9: Using a pen or marker, go over the lines to make your drawing permanent. Ink slowly and carefully to avoid accidents. When you ink the iris, DON’T trace over the line that’s inside the small glare circle. The insides of the glare circles should be blank. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your drawing! This drawing was colored digitally using a gradient that goes from dark yello-green to light yellow-green. The same can be achieved with color pencils, markers or crayons! Start coloring the eye dark yellow-green at the top and then slowly and lightly transition to light yellow-green at the bottom. You can also use dark blue at the top and light blue at the bottom for blue eyes. Using two colors gives the iris a more rounded feel. For a simpler drawing, you can also just use a single color for the iris. You can also use any other color you want like purple or pink. If you left the insides of your eyebrows blank, you can also color them in using any color you want.
