Step 1: Draw a curved line for the top part of the woman’s eye. The shape should be similar to a wide arc or an angled rainbow. The right side of the arc should be higher than the left side. Thicken up the lines except for the ends. The ends should be thin and pointy.
Step 2: On the right side of the previous line, draw a shorter line that curves down for the side of the woman’s eye. This line should be thick at the top and thin and pointy at the bottom. Notice how this line curves to the lower, left side. At the bottom, draw another curved line for the bottom of the eye. This line should be thinner and flatter. The overall shape of the eye should be similar to an oval on its side. The shape has to be somewhat flat because it’s for an adult woman. The eye for a young girl would be bigger and rounder.
Step 3: On the top, right side of the eye, draw a few small, triangular shapes for the first part of the eyelashes. The eyelashes should be similar to tiny spikes curving to the right. The eyelashes should be small in the middle and they should gradually get bigger toward the right side. On the left, draw a couple more eyelashes the same way. On the the bottom, draw three more triangular shapes for the lower eyelashes. The eyelashes at the bottom should be very small.
Step 4: Inside the eye, draw a big circular shape for the iris. The top part of the iris will be behind the the outer shape of the eye, so don’t draw the top part. The iris should almost touch the bottom edge of the eye shape.
Step 5: In the middle of the iris, draw a circle for the pupil. Shade the inside of the circle for a dark pupil. Don’t shade too dark for a sketchy feel and so that it’s easy to erase when you ink it later. Notice the amount of space between the circle and the edge of the iris.
Step 6: On the top, right side of the iris, draw a small circle for a highlight or glare. Draw directly over the edge of the iris. The line will be erased at a later step. This circle should be about the same size as the pupil. On the lower, left side of the iris, draw another circle for more highlights. Make this circle bigger than the pupil.
Step 7: Above the eye, not too far up, draw a long, curved horizontal line for the eyelid crease. It’s okay if the line overlaps the eyelashes on the right. The left side of the line should angle and curve down more than the right side. On the top, left side, draw another small angled line for more detail on the eyelid.
Step 8: Higher above the eye, draw a long thick, long line for the eyebrow. The left side of the eyebrow should be thick and it should slope up to the top, right side. The shape of the eyebrow should bend a bit near the middle. The right tip should be thin and pointy.
Step 9: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your drawing permanent. When you ink the iris, DON’T trace over the line that’s inside the small highlight circles. The insides of the highlight circles should be blank. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your drawing! This drawing was colored digitally using a gradient that goes from dark blue to light blue. The same can be achieved with color pencils, markers or crayons! Start coloring the eye dark blue at the top and then slowly and lightly transition to light blue at the bottom. You can also use dark brown at the top and light brown at the bottom for a brown eye. Using two colors gives the iris a more rounded feel. For a simpler drawing, just use a single color for the iris. Manga characters can have unusual eye colors too, so you can color your eye purple or orange or any other color you’d like!
