Step 1: Draw two short, wide arcs for the top parts of the man’s eyes. Draw both arcs the same shape and size. The dotted line in the middle is to help you visualize the distance between the eyes. That means that the space between the eyes is the width of another arc of the same size.
If you need help with the spacing of the eyes, then draw the arc on the far left side first. Then directly to it’s right, lightly sketch another arc of the exact same width (this is represented by the dotted line). Then to the right of that, draw the arc for the eye on the right using yet another arc of the exact same size. Erase the middle arc when you get the sizes right.
Angle the shapes of the arcs a bit and make the lines thick to represent eyelashes. The tips of the arcs should be thin and pointy. The outer tips should be slightly higher than the inner tips.
Step 2: On the bottom part of each eye, draw a line that curves inward for the bottoms of the eyes. Notice that the inner corners of the eyes don’t connect. The overall shape of each eye should be similar to a little football. The shapes of each eye are somewhat flat because they are for an adult male. The eyes for a young boy would be bigger and rounder.
Step 3: Inside each eye shape, draw a circular shape for the man’s irises. The top parts of the irises are hiding behind the top edges of the eyes, so don’t draw those parts. It’s important to make each side the same, so sketch lightly at first and take your time until you get the shapes right. If you’re having a hard time drawing the circles, just trace the outer edge of a coin, a bottle cap or any other object with a circular edge
Step 4: Inside each iris, draw a small circle for the man’s pupils and shade them in. Draw the pupils directly in the middle of each eye. Pay attention to the sizes of the pupils in relation to the irises. On the left side of each iris, draw a small circle for some highlight or glare on the man’s eyes. Draw the circles directly over the edges of the irises. The lines inside the highlight circles will be erased at a later step. On the lower, right side of each iris, draw a slightly bigger oval for more highlights.
Step 5: Directly above each eye, draw a short, horizontal line for wrinkles. Slightly higher above each eye, draw a longer, angled horizontal line for the folds of the eyelids. These lines should bend on the inner and outer edges. The tips of these lines should be pointy. Above each eyelid, draw a smaller angular line for a wrinkle on the adult man’s eyes.
Step 6: Higher above the each eye, draw a very long, curved, horizontal line for the bottom edge of the man’s eyebrows. The lines should be similar to giant check marks. The outer tips of the lines should be high and they should slope down and toward the middle. The inner tips of the lines should curve up a bit.
Step 7: Draw another long, curved, horizontal line at the top for the top edges of the man’s eyebrows. The higher up you draw these lines, the thicker the shapes of the eyebrows will be. Add a few short, spike-like shapes on the inner tips of the shapes to make the eyebrows a bit bushy. Notice that the inner tips of the eyebrows are wide and the outer tips are thin.
Step 8: Shade the inside of the man’s eyebrows. If you’d like, you can leave the insides blank so that when you ink in the next step, your drawing won’t get smudgy. You can also skip this step and leave the inside blank and later color the inside whatever color you want.
Step 9: Using a pen or marker, go over the lines to make your drawing permanent. Ink slowly and carefully to avoid accidents. When you ink the irises, DON’T trace over the lines that are inside the small highlight circles. The insides of the small highlight circles should be blank. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your drawing! This drawing was colored digitally using a gradient that goes from dark blue to light blue. The same can be achieved with color pencils, markers or crayons! Start coloring the eye dark blue at the top and then slowly and lightly transition to light blue or sky blue at the bottom. You can also use dark green at the top and light green at the bottom for green eyes. Using two colors gives the irises a more rounded feel. For a simpler drawing, you can also just use a single color for the irises. You can also use any other color you want like purple or orange. Add a bit of gray to the underside of the top eyelids for some shadows.
